A mansion is reborn
In the beating heart of Paris, an Art Deco townhouse has regained its full splendor thanks to a bold yet respectful transformation overseen by Stéphanie Coutas.
This exceptional 1000 sqm residence once inhabited by nuns now combines the refinement of its historic heritage with opulent contemporary comfort. Renowned French interior designer-decorator Stéphanie Coutas stands out for her remarkable creations, enhanced by the integration of contemporary art, as seen in the Madame Drouot hotel in Paris or the Bastide des Vignes in Saint-Tropez. "I tried to breathe life and modernity into this house, while preserving its identity", says this crafter of beauty for whom this represents her seventh collaboration with the owners. This mutual trust provided scope for almost complete creative freedom, the only real guideline being the number of suites.
One of the major feats of this renovation lies in the complete reconfiguration of the spaces. "This Parisian townhouse originally had several small rooms that were rearranged and opened up to provide a broader sense of space and comfort." The ground floor now revolves around a majestic central entrance gallery, leading on one side to the living room as well as the library and on the other to the diving room, TV lounge and kitchen.
Light floods the rooms thanks to ingenious solutions. "We were fortunate to work on spaces with beautiful volumes and large openings, such as the glass roof we took care to preserve, or others we created", says the project manager. This approach enables a "vertical reading of the building", while light-toned colors and mirror effects further intensify the natural light.
The basement of this residence perhaps reveals the most impressive of transformations. "The integration of the swimming pool space was a real challenge", admits the architect. "The glass ceiling opening and the green wall rising along the kitchen wall allowed sunlight to enter and also created a majestic spa worthy of a grand hotel." Complemented by a gym, this exceptional wellness space is a rarity in the Parisian real estate landscape.
Noble materials are a key leitmotif of this renovation project highlighting French craftsmanship excellence, as evidenced by the leather-upholstered headboards made by the Fey workshops, as well as the stair railing crafted by wrought-iron artist Dunod Mallier.

The Art Deco soul of this residence harmoniously interacts with carefully orchestrated contemporary touches. “All my projects necessarily include artistic inspirations and references, but what sets this place apart is the harmonious blend of contemporary artworks and vintage 20th-century pieces, such as brass vases by Jean Dunand, ceramics by René Buthaud, or bronze armchairs by Marcel Coard", explains Stéphanie. This Parisian villa perfectly embodies her vision: "I love creating an indoor-outdoor flow in which sunlight and plants mingle, bringing an indispensable touch of Nature". This transformation has preserved the spirit of the place while elegantly propelling it into the 21st century.
J’aime beaucoup que les espaces intérieurs rejoignent les espaces extérieurs.
